  • PUBG is adding destructible buildings and terrain to the battle royale game
  • Destruction will arrive in an early state this April
  • The game is also moving to Unreal Engine 5 with a host of other improvements

The free-to-play battle royale game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is going hard in 2024 with a slew of new features. Alongside a switch to Unreal Engine 5, the PUBG 2024 roadmap will also introduce destructible maps to add new strategies for fans.

Revealed in a 25-minute video, PUBG’s biggest feature for 2024 is the introduction of destruction into its maps. Inspired by the popularity of free-to-play FPS game The Finals, PUBG will introduce massive destruction tech that revises how you play the game.

Just like with The Finals, you’ll soon be able to blast holes in buildings and even topple entire structures to create new routes of attack and opportunities to escape. However, PUBG destruction goes one step further, allowing you to blow trenches into fields that you can hole up in and snipe from.

By providing players the ability to strategically destroy sections of buildings, we unlock the possibility for them to carve out new attack routes or construct defensive barriers,” reads a statement sent via a press release. “This feature hopes to go beyond mere environmental destruction, infusing the game with an enriched layer of strategy and tactics.”

PUBG developer PUBG Studios explained that the introduction of destruction aims to “add dynamism to the game and create unpredictable situations, necessitating players to change their strategies flexibly according to circumstances.”

The introduction of PUBG destruction is schedule to occur in an upcoming April update. However, this isn’t the only major change coming to the battle royale game in the near future.

Alongside the destruction tech, PUBG is also being upgraded to Unreal Engine 5 on PC and console. Currently powered by Unreal Engine 4, the battle royale game will be overhauled with a huge engine update that allows for a better update pipeline and stability updates.

PUBG’s 2024 roadmap will also bring user generated content to the game, matchmaking overhauls, ranked mode improvements and updates to the game’s gunplay over the course of the year.

While the battle royale genre is currently less popular than it was a few years ago, with games like Apex Legends planning to move away from the genre, PUBG is still incredibly popular. With the addition of awesome destruction as well as some much needed tech improvements, PUBG may be overhauled into a much more complex and awe-inspiring multiplayer game.

PUBG is currently available on PC, Xbox and PlayStation for free.
