Creatures Inc and The Pokemon Company have announced Pokemon TCG Pocket, a new digital version of the physical trading card game. Despite the recent launch of Pokemon TCG Live, this new mobile game will offer features not found in the current version of the game.

Announced during the recent Pokemon Presents alongside Pokemon Legends Z-A and new Pokemon GO content, Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket doesn’t say it’s replacing the current version of the app. However, it is offering something very different.

Made in collaboration with DeMA, Creatures Inc and The Pokemon Company, the new mobile app will allow you to open virtual packs of cards, trade them and engage in quick battles with your friends. However, there’s no mention of using card codes found in physical packs to get extra cards, something TCG Live does.

Furthermore, Pokemon TCG Pocket is only coming to Android and iOS whereas TCG Live is available on mobile and PC. Will both versions of the game be available and supported? What the hell is going on? Nobody really knows!

Alongside the recreations of the Pokemon Trading Card Game, the new app actually expands on it. Some cards have been recreated as “Immersive Cards” which expand on the artwork found in rare cards. With these cards, you’ll be able to jump into the artwork and look around, seeing things you otherwise wouldn’t. It’s very cool. Furthermore, unique app-only cards may also be introduced.

“As an app that allows you to easily collect Pokemon cards that are enjoyed all over the world, it also trys to create card interpretation that are only possible along with digital technology,” reads the app’s complicated trailer description. “Not only nostalgic illustrations in the past, but also completely new cards that only appear in the application would be included. Stay tuned for an even more widely expanded Pokemon card collection experience!”

Pokemon TCG Pocket releases on mobile sometime later this year. As for what happens to the current app, your guess is as good as ours.
