Xbox and Obsidian Entertainment have revealed new gameplay of Avowed, a new first-person action RPG set in the world of Pillars of Eternity.

Revealed during Xbox’s Developer Direct, the new Avowed gameplay revealed just how extensive the new RPG game really is. From returning to Obsidian’s Fallout New Vegas focus on world reactivity to a fantastic real-time reproduction of Pillars of Eternity’s combat.

In the new gameplay video, director Gabriel Paramo discussed the game’s fantastic-looking combat system.

“We have a flexible combat system that allows you to swap between spell casting and melee to sharpshooting,” Paramo said. “We provide customisable loadouts that can be quickly swapped during gameplay.”

The footage shows players dual wielding wands to feel like an enchanted mage, dual wielding pistols like a pulp comic cowboy or even swinging a massive axe at your foes like a beserking brute.

As you explore the living lands put a stop to a mysterious spiritual plague, you’ll experience missions that only Obsidian can create. Just like New Vegas and The Outer Worlds, Avowed’s quests are all about consequence.

One side quest shown during the reveal sees you come across the bodies of fallen soldiers and see you decide which side is at fault. At the end of the mission, you can confront an NPC or side with him, causing NPCs to react either positively or negatively towards you. That’s just one quest.

With Bethesda Game Studio’s long-awaited Starfield falling far behind fan expectations, Avowed may offer fans the Skyrim experience they’ve been craving. As The Elder Scrolls VI is still many years away, Avowed is the best fantasy RPG we’ll have for years.

Comtinuing Obsidian’s history of stunning roleplaying games, Avowed will likely also be one of the best Xbox exclusives of 2024. Alongside MachineGames’ Indiana Jones, the upcoming RPG is worthy of hype.

Avowed releases on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC in Fall 2024.
