Mother 3 is officially coming to Nintendo Switch Online and players can enjoy this GBA classic on the Switch…assuming they’re in Japan. That’s right, Nintendo has found yet another way to torment Western fans everywhere by finally re-releasing this classic JRPG in a very limited capacity.

Game Awards creator Geoff Keighley confirmed that the third entry to Nintendo’s Mother series was announced during the Nintendo Direct. However, it was only shown during the Japanese Nintendo Direct, so it looks like this game is stuck there for the time being.

To twist that knife in the heart a bit more, Nintendo also announced adorable Mother 3 plushies, torturing us even more. Admittedly, hardcore fans will find a way to get those plushies in their hands, but it’s disappointing to see this game not get a proper translation. Again.

What’s annoying about this is that Nintendo knows Western fans want the game, especially since they keep adding Lucas to the Super Smash Bros. games. It just feels like the company is rubbing it in at this point and fans are not happy with this, at least, Western ones aren’t.

If we want to get technical about it, there are other ways to play an English version of Mother 3. A successful fan project was able to fully translate the game and make it available for everyone aware of GBA emulation. We won’t tell you how to get a copy of the game, but anyone who is internet savvy enough will figure it out.

Emulation is fun and all, but it would be nice if Nintendo could translate Mother 3 or even make a full-blown remake of the beloved RPG. The company was willing to translate the first game, Earthbound Beginnings, for Wii U, 3DS, and Nintendo Switch, so we’re not sure why they won’t do the same here.

Japanese fans will be able to enjoy Mother 3 on Nintendo Switch Online. Maybe the rest of the world will be able to legally play it one day, but that’s not today.
