James McCaffrey, the actor behind iconic video game roles in Alan Wake and Max Payne, has reportedly died following a battle with cancer.

Last known for his role in Alan Wake 2 as Alex Casey, McCaffrey has been a prominent voice in the entertainment history following his debut in 1987’s New York’s Finest.

According to a report from TMZ, the actor passed away following a battle with multiple myeloma. A representative for the actor told the outlet that he ultimately succumbed to the disease. He was 65.

“One of Dick Wolf's proteges (Swift Justice), McCaffrey went on to a successful 35 year career in television and film,” the representative wrote. “Trained at the Actor's Studio, he never lost his love for creating characters; however, his good looks often pushed him toward leading man roles."

News of his passing spread online following a post from Entourage star Kevin Dillon. The actor posted an image of the actor with the caption: “RIP James McCaffery, we were lucky to have known you. My best friend, you will be missed.

The actor is said to have passed away on Sunday, surrounded by friends and family. Prior to today, the actor’s cancer battle was undocumented, shocking many fans of his work in projects such as the recently released Alan Wake 2.

Remedy Entertainment released a statement regarding the actor’s passing, paying tribute to McCaffery’s legacy.

“We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of our beloved friend and collaborator James McCaffrey, the iconic voice of Max Payne and Alex Casey,” the studio said. “His remarkable talent not only gave life to our characters but also left an enduring impact on our community. Our hearts go out to his family in this time of loss.”

McCaffery made his video game debut in 2001’s Max Payne, a role he kept until the latest entry Max Payne 3. It’s not known if his iconic voice will make its way into the in-development remakes or the first two games.

The actor kept his relationship with Remedy Entertainment across the years, playing Alex Casey in both Alan Wake games and Zachariah Trench in Control. Alan Wake 2 is the actor’s last official role.

James McCaffery will be fondly remembered by fans of his works, from TV to film to games. Thousands of fans are already writing tributes to the late actor.
