Insomniac Games is planning to retire its version of Peter Parker in new Spider-Man games. Following the release of the PS5 exclusive Spider-Man 2, Miles Morales’ version of the hero will be the universe’s main hero going forward.

Revealed in an interview with Gizmodo, Insomniac’s narrative director Ben Arfmann and writer Brittney Morris revealed that Miles Morales is now the main webhead in the PlayStation game series from this point on.

The following contains spoilers for the ending of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Following the events of the Venom Symbiote in the final act of Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker takes a break from his role as New York’s number one superhero. As the character took a break during the Miles Morales spin-off game, fans assumed that Parker’s break would last until the upcoming third title.

However, Insomniac confirmed that Miles’ Spider-Man will be the main hero of new installments, even if the eventual Spider-Man 3 will focus on Peter Parker’s longtime nemesis, Green Goblin.

“It always felt very natural, and I think we all collectively thought it would happen,” Morris explained. “To me, it shows a great deal of evolution from Miles; at the beginning of the game, we see him struggling to figure out what he wants to do with his life. By the end, we had Miles carrying the burden of saving the city, and also carrying Pete when Pete wasn’t strong enough to carry himself at various points.”

“That’s what’s been so cool about writing a story about two Spider-Men,” they continued “They’re both strong, and one of them can be strong when the other is not. By the end, Miles is more confident and he’s like, ‘Yeah, I got this. How much worse can things get after what we just went through?’”

It seems unlikely that the final entry of the Insomniac trilogy will completely replace Peter Parker. After all, the character is considerably more popular than Miles Morales, even if the latter’s Spider-Verse movies are incredible and incredibly popular. Even with Peter Parker’s Spider-Man suffering through horrid comic runs for the past few years, he is still one of the best-selling comic book characters on the market, the same goes for movies and games.

The news that Insomniac’s Miles Morales will be the main video game Spider-Man going forward has not sat well with fans. Many have expressed disdain at the character taking over at a point in the story that doesn’t make sense. While Insomniac’s Miles has grown considerably since his introduction in the original game’s DLC, the narrative seems to be heading towards a heated battle against Parker’s wall-crawler and his greatest foe.

Spider-Man 2 is available right now on PlayStation 5. A PC release is likely coming in the next year. You can read our review of the game right here, if you want.
