Breakdown

  • Call of Duty cheaters got hacked and lost their Bitcoin from a recent Malware attack
  • These cheaters are working with Activision Blizzard to get their money back
  • Even those who aren't cheating were affected by this hack

Multiplayer games are filled with cheaters who exploit other players and Call of Duty is no exception, as these shooters are filled with unfair players. In an interesting turn of events, a hacker group has decided to target these cheaters with malware, stealing their Bitcoin in the process.

According to vx-underground (via CoinDesk), this form of malware has affected thousands of players, with more that are soon to come. These cheaters are losing a ton of money and they’ve even gone to Activision Blizzard for help to get their Bitcoin currency back.

While this sounds like a fitting punishment for the Call of Duty cheaters, it was noted that there were also several normal gamers who were affected by the malware. So even those who just want to play the shooter series regularly ended up losing money to the malware, which is a shame.

“A Call of Duty cheat provider (PhantomOverlay) was alerted of fraudulent activity when user accounts began making unauthorized purchases. The cheat provider was the first to notice the fraudulent activity and reached out to the suspected victim. Since the initial victim was identified, more and more victims have been identified,” vx-underground tweeted.

Based on the tweet, it seems that over 3 million Battle.net owners are affected by the malware and we doubt they are all cheaters. Now that Activision Blizzard is working with the cheaters to find the people responsible, it will be interesting to see if they can get any good results.

Things haven’t been great for the Call of Duty franchise these past few weeks, especially with this new malware incident. Players previously brought up how much they don’t like the current Call of Duty Mobile game that was recently released. Despite all this, CoD Mobile did make a ton of money from microtransactions, showing that there are plenty of people willing to spend on this mobile shooter.
