More layoffs as 505 Games closes numerous offices in Europe

We’re only at the end of February and video game companies can’t stop with the layoffs, as 505 Games is the latest publisher to close some offices. The news comes not long after 505 Games relinquished the rights to Control back to Alan Wake studio Remedy Entertainment, so things aren’t looking good.

According to Gamereactor (via Reddit), 505 Games will be going through a major restructuring, affecting the company’s offices in countries like Germany, Spain, and France. While the company isn’t closing down anytime soon, this is a major loss to their communications with these other countries.

Ongoing projects reportedly aren’t too affected by this, at least not yet, though it does make the recent news about the Control IP a lot more interesting. The report does say that this is more of a coincidence than anything else, but it’s still a troubling sign for this publisher.

505 Games may have lost the rights to Control, but it seems that the publisher still has plenty of video games they’re working on. The racing game Assetto Corsa 2 is still slated to be released under the publisher since the relationship with 505 and developer Kunos Simulazioni is still close.

The report also claims that a triple-A project is coming, published by 505 and developed by Metroid Dread developer MercurySteam. Details on this game are pretty slim, but it seems that the publisher is putting a lot of faith in whatever this project is.

Layoffs have been happening left and right in the video game industry, so seeing that streak continue with 505 Games is very disappointing. PlayStation laid off 8% of their workers and that affected Insomniac Games, who worked on the beloved Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. EA has also done its fair share of layoffs, even canceling the highly-anticipated Star Wars FPS developed by Respawn Entertainment.

Despite the layoffs, 505 Games is still publishing high-profile games like the Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons remake and the PC port of Death Stranding: Director’s Cut.
