Have you ever been wandering around your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons without anything to do? You could be waiting for a character to return or the day to turn into night and just be looking for something to do. Instead of fishing for the hundredth time, perhaps you would be interested in some light-hearted pranking on unsuspecting villages.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a relatively innocent game, but that doesn't mean you can't occasionally lay traps for your friends and other villagers. You can use pitfall seeds for this, and we'll show you how to get and use pitfall seeds in our guide below for all aspiring island pranksters.

Getting pitfall seeds in Animal Crossing: New Horizons
To get pitfall seeds in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, players will need to unlock the DIY recipe and craft them manually. It's not a hard recipe to fulfil, but there's randomnesses involved in actually obtaining the recipe itself.
We've laid out all the possible ways to get it below:
Pitfall seed DIY recipe sources
- Beach bottles
- Balloon gifts
- Talking with villagers
- Digging up pitfall seeds on other players' islands
They're easy to put together, too – you just need four clumps of weeds and six tree branches.
What are pitfall seeds?
Pitfall seeds are essentially prank items that let you trap villagers in a hole in the ground – hence the name. In fact, for many, it looks like the kind of spot where you'd dig for a fossil.
So while they don't have any real gameplay use in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, they are enjoyable when you have nothing else to do on your island.
Using pitfall seeds
Using your shovel, dig a hole and then plant the seed. Then you'll need to wait for a villager or another player to fall in. When either of them steps on the buried seed, they'll get briefly stuck in the pit and look like a fool.
