Horizon Forbidden West is an action role-playing game from Guerilla Games and it's the long-awaited sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn. The headstrong and fierce protagonist Aloy returns to save the world again, just six months after the ending of the first game.

The world around her is falling apart, a mysterious red blight is plaguing the land, and threatening to destroy everything. Aloy must venture into the Forbidden West to figure out a way to save her world once more. However, the plague is only one of the many threats she will encounter. Fortunately, Aloy has a few tricks up her sleeves that can make her journey easier, including the ability to control machines.

In this guide, we're going to show you how to override machines.

How to Override Machines

There are three main steps you need to take to override a machine.

Step One - Learn How

Aloy needs to know the override code for that specific machine. Some machines can be overridden without learning the code for them. For the rest, you'll need to explore and complete Cauldrons to learn the code. Once you completed a Cauldron, Aloy would download the override code, and extra machine information to her spear. If this is the same in Forbidden West, you will be ready to override a machine after learning the code.

Step Two - Override

There are two ways you can attempt to override a machine. The easiest way is to sneak up behind it without being spotted and follow the prompted controls to override it.

When you start to override a machine, a small bar should appear above the spear. This shows you how much of the machine you have taken over and the bar must complete for you to completely override it. However, if you are knocked away while you are trying to complete the override sequence, it will not work. Also, larger machines take a longer time to override.

If you are knocked away, you can knock the machine down again to stun it. While it's stunned, the override control prompt should appear again. Follow it and let the sequence finish completely to take control of that machine.

Step Three - Use Your Machine

If you can mount the machine, mount them, and ride off to your next destination. However, if you cannot mount them, the machine can still protect you. This can be especially useful if you find yourself outnumbered by large machines.

When it comes to overriding a machine, being stealthy is always the best option.

Can You Override Every Machine?

Every machine, apart from Tallnecks, can be overridden. However, you will need to learn the override codes for the machines to be able to do so.
