Status effects in Super Mario RPG

There are seven different status effects your party can get hit with in Super Mario RPG. Here’s a quick rundown of each one.

  • Mute: Disables the use of Special moves with Y
  • Sleep: Prevents you from taking any action until woken up. Getting hit with an enemy attack will wake you up.
  • Poison: Take a small amount of damage every turn.
  • Fear: Reduces your Attack, Mg. Attack, Defense, and Mg. Defence as you shake with fear.
  • Mushroom: Transforms you into a mushroom, preventing you from taking actions. Gradually heals HP while transformed.
  • Scarecrow: Disables attacking with A or using items with X. You can still use special moves with Y.
  • Downed: You will be completely unable to act. Characters will gain this status effect after their HP reaches 0 and will not end on its own after a few turns have passed.

Characters can only suffer from one status effect at a time. After three turns, party members will recover from status effects except for Downed.

Allies can be cleansed of status effects before three turns pass by using certain items and abilities. You can even prevent some status effects from landing through the use of accessories.
