How to catch Stardew Valley Octopus

Like all fishing activities in Stardew Valley, catching an Octopus involves a minigame. This creature is a sinker, which means it drops quicker than it rises to the surface.

With a difficulty rating of 95, the Octopus is the hardest non-unique fish to catch in the entire game. With that said, here are a few useful tips on how to catch an Octopus:

  • Wait until your fishing level reaches 10
  • Eat food that increases fishing ability
  • Get an Iridium Rod and equip it with a Cork Bobber
  • Head to the Forge and apply 'Master' to the rod for an extra +1 fishing skill

Of course, there's always a chance of catching an Octopus during the first year without any of the benefits listed above. If you don't fancy the challenge, you can purchase an Octopus from the Traveling Cart.

Stardew Valley Octopus uses

The most obvious use of an Octopus in Stardew Valley is eating it. You can eat it directly from the inventory. You can also use it in recipes such as Sashimi and Maki Rolls.

Alongside eating them, you can gift Octopus to your fellow villages. Elliot likes to receive the creature while Willy absolutely adores them. In addition to gifting, the Octopus sometimes appears on the Help Wanted board.

If you plan on selling any Octopus you catch, it's bad news. A standard Octopus only sells for 150 Gold while the Iridium-quality Octopus sells for 300 Gold. Compared to the 700 Gold for selling a Lava eel, you may want to either sell them in bulk or look for other uses.

Catching an Octopus also contributes to the 'catch every fish' challenge. Once complete, Willy will give you a Stardrop in the mail.
