It has been confirmed that controller support is available for online and local co-op multiplayer gameplay. While online co-op does not limit players to using the same peripheral during gameplay, this is different for local co-op split-screen gameplay. Players will be forced to play with two controllers.

What's the best controller for Baldur's Gate on PC?

This one comes down to personal preference. For ease of use, you're probably going to want to go with a Steam controller or an Xbox controller for that plug-and-play functionality.
