Twitch Plays Pokémon quickly became a phenomenon online, as users wanted to see how these classic RPGs would be beaten via commands from Twitch chat. It might be hard to believe but this series is turning 10 and the channel producers are celebrating this landmark anniversary by bringing back “anarchy” controls.

According to Polygon, this anniversary stream is going back to what made these shows popular in the first place. For those unaware, “Anarchy” controls is when the producers follow the commands of the chat, no matter how chaotic it is. “Democracy” controls were introduced so that commands would be decided via a vote but the producers won’t be using that for this stream.

While the Twitch Plays Pokémon streams have always used emulation, this anniversary stream is going to use actual Nintendo hardware as part of the celebration. The producers are using an original copy of Pokémon Red and the game will be played on an SNES with the Super Game Boy adapter.

It seems that this playthrough of Pokémon Red won’t be the only thing done for the channel’s anniversary, as a promise was made to go through all the regions. The producers are planning to go through a “super gauntlet” through the games, as they try to play each title with unique hardware. Since the producers won’t be using emulation for these games, it’s going to be interesting to see what they cook up after the Game Boy titles.

Seeing the classic games return for Twitch Plays Pokémon is nice, especially since Nintendo and The Pokémon Company still won’t re-release the older games on Switch. Right now, there is no official way to play the older games unless you downloaded the original Game Boy titles on the 3DS eShop when it was still available.
