Naughty Dog’s recent string of budget cuts has made fans wonder about their Last of Us multiplayer spin-off, which is reportedly ‘on ice.’ While some rumours have floated around its supposed cancelation, a high-profile gaming journalist has suggested that this isn’t the case at all.

Jason Schreier of Bloomberg fame was asked on Twitter if the rumours about Naughty Dog’s multiplayer spin-off being canceled were true. Schreier quickly debunked any talk of that, saying that these rumours of cancelation came from a random Twitter account.

Few journalists in gaming are as credible as Schreier, so it’s easy to assume that this Last of Us multiplayer spin-off isn’t canceled, at least not yet. However, if the game isn’t canceled, the real question is ‘where is it?’ or ‘is it really coming out.’

One could say that Naughty Dog got too excited and announced this spin-off sooner than they should have. However, reports of this multiplayer spin-off have been going around for a while now, suggesting it’s been in development hell for the longest time.

Since the project is supposedly ‘on ice’ after the layoffs, the company will seemingly make redundant remasters until something new pops up. With HBO’s The Last of Us becoming a monumental hit, it seems that Naughty Dog is in the remaster mines for a bit longer. Considering how The Last of Us Part 1 sold gangbusters after the show’s premiere, we hope that trend ends when Part 2 gets remastered for PS5.

Leaks for a remaster of The Last of Us Part 2 have recently made the rounds, with many agreeing that it’s the most unnecessary remake ever. The PS4 original still looks great and runs decently on PS5, so going 4K and 120fps won’t add much. However, with the second season being based on the sequel’s events, a remaster to tie in with the show seems more than likely.
