Others have decided to post daily comments on one of the game’s trailers or start preparing to make mods for it. Meanwhile, one has been working on something a young Todd Howard would definitely approve of.
Fancy playing a space-themed tabletop RPG while you wait for Starfield?
This eager fan, Reddit user Bridneus, has shared their creation, a Starfield-inspired one-page tabletop RPG called Planetfield, on the Starfield subreddit.
The RPG casts players as a member of a space exploration group dubbed ‘The Zodiac’ and tasks them with hunting down four “fragments of an alien artefact called an Eldritch Apparatus," while also exploring space. Sounds a bit familiar, doesn’t it?
“It's fully playable solo (obviously),” Bridneus, who also goes by the handle Archmage Arispen, revealed in a comment on the post, explaining: “You need a pencil, some coloured pencils or paint (to colour the planets and a star) and a d10 die (or simulate it on your device).”
Among the possible events awaiting you and a band of friends as you map out and explore the RPG’s five planet solar system are encounters with creatures that could be banana or elephant sized and even the chance to end up acquiring some well preserved sandwiches.
Playing it is also a very fitting way to while away the hours ahead of Starfield, given Todd Howard has listed Traveller, a sci-fi tabletop RPG originally published in the 1970s, as one of its most prominent inspirations in a Constellation Questions video last year.
You can download a PDF version of Planetfield for free from Archmage Arispen’s Itch.io page.
Odds are Starfield will get an official licensed tabletop counterpart at some point down the line, as the Fallout series already has, but Planetfield looks like it should offer some good fun in the interim.
