A lot of tea was spilt in Insomniac's huge data leak at the hands of the hacking group Rhysida, including a major update for Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Amid all the rumours of a potential DLC featuring Daredevil, one development that was perhaps not expected for the Game of the Year nominee was an online mode. Yet, here we are, absorbing all the data that was revealed by the hackers, staring down the barrel of a new spin on the web-slinging game.

In a stunning end to 2023, developer giant Insomniac has been subjected to a major leak of sensitive information totalling nearly 1.7 terabytes in size, outlining major spoilers in the company's future. The hackers primarily targeted the dev's upcoming title Marvel's Wolverine but also revealed what the company has in store for players right up until 2035, including new IPs, upcoming sequels, and some plans to tap into the online gaming market. Among the future projects set for release were Marvel's Venom, Wolverine, Spider-Man 3, X-Men, and a new Ratchet & Clank game. Perhaps the most surprising of the projects in the works is the one due out next - Spider-Man 2 Online.

While there's no word on how exactly Insomniac plans to structure an online mode for the superhero series, fans may not have to wait long to find out what it'll entail. Unless Insomniac makes some drastic changes in light of the recent hack, we can expect the new game mode to come out sometime in 2024. If that's the case, then the marketing and promotion of the online expansion could very well be on our doorstep soon. It will certainly be interesting to see how the new mode will look, given the story-based nature and minimal playable characters in the title.

Fans can get their hands on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PS5 now, with a PC port likely coming soon. The online mode will likely be an extension of this, but more information will no doubt surface in the near future.
