PS5 Expandable SSD Announced by Western Digital

Sony's inclusion of an SSD in the design of the PlayStation 5 has had fans excited since it was revealed.

The speed and convenience provided by an SSD in the PS5 is incomparable to that of the PS4.

A recent video released by Sony even explains how an expansion SSD can be fitted into the PS5.

Now users are aware upgrades can be made, questions are being asked about which expansion SSDs are compatible with the PS5.

Western Digital Have Announced A PS5 Compatible SSD

One potential option for consumers may be Western Digital's new WD Black SN850.

The advertisements surrounding the SSD have directly labelled it is compatible with the PS5.

However, the SSD has yet to be reviewed by Sony and confirmed as a compatible component.

The SN850 delivers an impressive read speed up to 7000 MB/s.

This topples the PS5's 5500 MB/s in-built SSD.

Western Digital has a number of size options for consumers.

Check it out below:

  • 500GB - $149.99
  • 1TB - $229.99
  • 2TB - $449.99

These prices match that of the Samsung 980 Pro, the other option for PS5 users.

The current price of expanding the PS5's internal storage is extremely high.

However, it's believed that with more options and competitors entering the space, the price will lower over time.

We'll have to wait and see whether Sony approve these expansion SSDs for use.

Let's hope more options and competitors arrive over the coming months.

The more choice, the better.
