Super Mario RPG Director Wants His Final Game to be "Another Mario RPG"


Game director Chihiro Fujioka - best known for working on Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars' - wants to make a new RPG featuring the Italian plumber. Having worked on the Mario & Luigi series since, Fujioka wants to make a new RPG with Nintendo’s icon.

Speaking with YouTube channel MinnMax (thanks NintendoLife), Fujioka was asked about Super Mario RPG, with the director admitting he wants to make another RPG as his final game. While he didn't specifically state this would be a Super Mario RPG sequel, he only wants players controlling Mario, ditching Luigi for this,

"Yeah, I would absolutely love to make one...yeah, so in my career, I've been involved in a lot of games and I would really like my final one to be another Mario RPG game, if possible..."
"Yeah, I would like to go back and create a Mario RPG (different from Mario & Luigi) where you're only controlling Mario..."

Super Mario RPG remains beloved by fans, and one character, Geno, was often requested for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. However, Nintendo seems to be moving Mario away from RPGs, with Paper Mario: The Origami King almost having no RPG mechanics beyond its turn-based battle system.

Super Mario RPG is currently available on the Wii U Virtual Console or the SNES Classic. Paper Mario, another RPG entry for the N64, can be played on the Nintendo Switch as part of the Online + Expansion Pack.
