Cyberpunk 2077’s highly-anticipated Phantom Liberty expansion is set to arrive next month, and in addition to providing a fresh story for players to delve into, it'll deliver a huge array of overhauls to the base game’s mechanics.

While modders have added anything from new missions to weapons and even a portable TV to CDPR’s futuristic RPG, long-time players are keen to see if the changes made by its original creators can finally help the game deliver an experience that matches its pre-release hype.

A fresh trailer teasing these revisions, dubbed ‘New Ways to Play,’ premiered during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live show, with one detail from it having caught the eyes of some anime-obsessed fans.

Which of the raft of changes coming to Cyberpunk 2077 with the Phantom Liberty expansion are you most excited about?

Alongside widely-publicised changes like the revamped police system and the overhaul of how vehicle combat works, the trailer featured looks at the full versions of the update’s revised perk trees.

While it showed off the effects of some of these new skills, such as ‘bullet deflect’ and ‘air dash,’ which do exactly what they say on the tin, some perks with images including characters from the popular Edgerunners anime have fans of it wondering what they could be all about.

The most noticeable of these features an image of the show’s protagonist, David Martinez. This could well be the one that CDPR creative director Pawel Sasko has referenced in interviews (thanks VGC) as allowing players to push the limits of their character’s new cyberware capacity limit.

That said, players think they’ve also spotted some perks related to Lucy and Rebecca from the anime. They’ve speculated these perks could deliver anything from transforming V into a shotgun-wielding gremlin to unlocking “pancake crafting.”

We’ll just have to wait and see what kinds of anime-inspired powers V will have at their disposal as they explore Dogtown with Idris Elba.

Regardless of whether you’re now planning out which Edgerunners character to base your Cyberpunk build for the expansion on, make sure to check out our coverage of Cyberpunk 2077 mods and our latest mods of the month.
