So, go first to Aerith’s house which is also in Sector 5. Going there will eventually task you to rescue some kids and bring them to the town.

Once you are done with the mission given to you, return to the church and the doors should be open by this point. Go to the room where a glowing yellow light is placed.

You may now get the Yellow Materia from the church. You can also go to the other side of the room to notch a chest which may contain additional rewards.
