Final Fantasy may have numerous mainline games and spinoffs, but each stands independently. Each game features new characters, stories, and worlds players must explore.
However, despite their differences, they still reference each other most interestingly, and Easter eggs have been a big part of the Final Fantasy series.
New players may have missed these references in the first try, while die-hard fans may have indeed spotted them. But some are so subtle that even longtime fans might not have noticed them.
With 16 mainline games, including spinoffs and sub-sequels, the world of Final Fantasy is so massive that it’s understandable that not every Easter egg has been discovered.
So, here are the five Final Fantasy Easter eggs that will surely blow players’ minds.
Developer’s Office – Final Fantasy IV
The Developer’s Office is the Developer’s Room or Dev. Team Office is a recurring secret location in the Final Fantasy IV universe.
Located in the Dwarven Castle, it features the sprite versions of the game’s development team, some custom and recoloured.
Each sprite describes its role in the game’s development; some even join the party in special scripted battles.
But among their many quirks, the most famous one is the adult magazine Lustful Lali-ho, which can be used for an unconventional mini-quest in the room.
The Secret Character Gogo – Final Fantasy VI
Gogo is a secret character in the World of Ruin in Final Fantasy VI. However, he’s not easy to obtain.
Players must initiate a fight against the Zone Eater and allow the ghoulish creature to consume each party member.
By doing so, they can finally find Gogo in a dungeon inside the enemy.
Gogo will immediately join the group, making him an instant party member.
However, compared to other Final Fantasy characters, he has no backstory, making him one of the most mysterious figures in the franchise.
As a skilled Mime who mimics the actions of other party members, Gogo is believed to be a reference to the Famed Mimic Gogo from Final Fantasy V.
His Desperation Attack, Punishing Meteor, could refer to the Famed Mimic Gogo punishing the party for being unable to mimic him properly. He, too, has a similar appearance to the Final Fantasy V boss.
Gilgamesh’s Sword Collection – Final Fantasy XII
Final Fantasy loves to pay homage to its previous games by using Easter eggs, but it uses Gilgamesh differently.
This time, the franchise utilises the great duelist by adding the past heroes’ swords to his collection.
Looking closely at his weapons, players notice that he possesses Tidus’ Brotherhood, Cloud’s Buster Sword, Squall’s Revolver, Zidane’s Orichalcon, and Odin’s Zanetsuken. Pretty clever, right?
Though there’s no backstory about how Gilgamesh obtains these swords, it’s a cute reference to the series’ fan-favourite characters.
Anyhow, it’s good to note that the swords differ in appearance in the games from which they come. The Bestiary even claims that none of those are authentic.
Final Fantasy VII Original Victory Theme Song – Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has a card game where players can join a tournament aboard a ship.
Also known as Queen’s Blood, this five-round game features five characters to defeat.
If the players win as Cloud in the final round, they will get a trophy from the ship’s captain.
Of course, there will be a celebration to honour this feat. As part of this, Cloud will hum the original FFVII victory theme song, bringing some major nostalgia.
The Dragoon’s Pose – Final Fantasy VXI
Final Fantasy XVI has an Easter Egg in a distinctive pose, which has become famous as one of the franchise's most iconic.
Before the Dragoon, the Knight of the Blinding Dawn attacks Clive on the night of the Phoenix Gate; he will make a pose that looks familiar to the series’ players.
In Final Fantasy IV, Kain bends his right knee and stands on one leg, and Estinien does the same pose in Final Fantasy XIV.
