In the first of a weekly series, we take a look back at the Gfinity Elite Series Delivered by Domino’s Rocket League action from a statistical point of view to reveal the top performers from the past week’s fixtures. We’ll be picking out five key points from the weekend to give you some more insight into how it all went down at the Gfinity Esports Arena.
1. Maestro conducts a masterclass
Despite Fnatic narrowly losing their first Gfinity Elite Series Delivered by Domino’s fixture to Epsilon, Maestro laid down a serious statement of intent in the first round of fixtures. Having been a fleeting presence during Season 3 for Fnatic (playing just one match and scoring only two goals), the Dane seemed dead set on making his mark and ended the first round of fixtures with an average rating of 1.77 and he already leads the scoring charts with 7 goals and has chipped in with 2 assists.
It wasn’t just at the sharp end of the field that Maestro had an impact, as he also leads the tournament regarding saves with an incredible 19 saves against Epsilon, an average of 3.80 saves per game. These stats make for even better reading when you consider Cheerio and Shakahron have the joint second most saves with 9 each, and that Shakahron has the second-best average saves per game with 3.00.
2. Kassio gives Method precisely what they’re looking for
After Shakahron moved on to pastures new with Reason Gaming, Method were looking for someone to step in alongside the Dutch duo of Rix Ronday and Borito B, and in the talented Frenchman Kassio, they seem to have found a strong third to add to the triumvirate.
On his Elite Series debut, Kassio hit 6 goals and provided 2 assists for his teammates, leaving him with a league-topping average of 2.00 goals per game level with eekso of Hashtag United. Kassio also ended the week with a shot conversion rate of 54.55%, the second-best rate in the league so far. With three wins from three, Method are also unbeaten, and Kassio will be looking to carry his perfect start into next week’s fixture against Envy.
3. Mixed signals from Fnatic
Although Fnatic came out second-best against Epsilon in their first match of Season 4, it wasn’t all doom and gloom after their first outing of the season. Despite losing 3-2, Fnatic ended the week with an average score per game of 1,130.00, the highest score in the league. Furthermore, Fnatic’s shooting conversion was 34.38%, the third best in the league, showing that they took their chances pretty well over their fives games.
However, Fnatic also made the most saves per game with 5.80, and it could be argued that this means that the defence was allowing Epsilon too many chances, a theory which is backed up by the fact that Fnatic conceded 10.60 shots per game, the highest of any team to play at the weekend. Regardless of the outcome, it is clear already that Fnatic may need to improve defensively to have a shot in the Elite Series, but that should their defence tighten up, they have more than enough firepower to go all the way.
4. Bilbo bags a hatful of assists
Bilbo was forced to watch from the sidelines last season as a substitute for Envy, but this year he has been given a chance to show what he can do as a starter for Epsilon. The Belgian made a promising start to life in Epsilon colours as he ended Week 1 with a league-best 5 assists across his team’s five games.
Despite his profligacy with assists, Bilbo only provided 50% of Epsilon’s assists in their 5 games against Fnatic, showing that the team assembled by Epsilon is gelling nicely and could be one to watch as the Elite Series continues. Bilbo also chipped in with 4 goals to help Epsilon to a tricky 3-2 win over Fnatic and was a threat throughout, taking 3.60 shots per game, the third best in the league so far. With Week 1’s match behind him, Bilbo will be looking to take his excellent form into Epsilon’s next fixture against Elite Series newcomers ASUS ROG Army.
5. Hashtag United keep it solid in defence
An inauspicious debut season in the Elite Series saw Hashtag United pick up just one win from their last fixture (albeit against eventual champions Renault Vitality). However, signs are good for Season 4 as a new-look starting roster featuring eekso, Jakeypoo and Rafro formed a formidable defensive unit.
Hashtag conceded a league-best 0.67 goals per game and also boasted the best save percentage at 85.71%. Hashtag also made the second least saves in Week 1 with just 12 saves across their three games, and these stats in tandem suggest that they were tough to break down. Hashtag’s win should be taken with a pinch of salt as they came up against Elite Series debutants ASUS ROG, and Hashtag should know that it can take some time to get your feet under the table at the Gfinity Esports Arena.
