Xbox has recognized the immense contributions of Akira Toriyama by providing a tribute to the legend of the anime and gaming community.

A dynamic dashboard background of 2006's Blue Dragon was released to honour his services. Toriyama, best known as the creator of the Dragon Ball franchise, passed away earlier this month at the age of 68.

The new dashboard contains the protagonist Shu and his Blue Dragon shadow, similar to the ones seen on the game’s original cover. Toriyama along with Yoshihito Takahashi had worked on the artwork for the debut game from Mistwalker Studios, whose creator would go on to make the Final Fantasy series.

Xbox posted on X/Twitter, “Honoring a true legend. We’ve added a new dynamic dashboard background featuring Xbox 360‘s Blue Dragon, with art and character designs by Akira Toriyama,”

Microsoft is known for releasing themes inspired by current events, holidays, or anniversaries. To celebrate Toriyama’s life, the background theme showed Shu with his blue dragon standing on a cliff with the moon shining behind them. The effort from Microsoft and Xbox saw much praise from fans discussing how much they missed the game and would love a remake.

While most will remember Toriyama for the world of Dragon Ball's anime/manga, he made a massive contribution to the world of gaming as well. Most notably, character designs for Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest.

Other games he has worked for include Dragon Ball: Shenlong no Nazo, Famicom Jump II: Saiky no Shichinin, Tobal No. 1 and 2, Blue Dragon, Blue Dragon Plus and Awakened Shadow, Chosoku Henkei, Gyrozetter, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Dragon Ball Legends, Jump Force, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot & Fantasian.

Earlier this month Bird Studio and Capsule put out a statement announcing the passing of the legend saying, “Thanks to the support of so many people around the world, he has been able to continue his creative activities for over 45 years. We hope that Akira Toriyama’s unique world of creation continues to be loved by everyone for a long time to come.”
