The Knights of Ren in Star Wars raise so many questions. Before the empire fell, what role did they play, and how did they get to their position of power? A canon comic book series called Star Wars: Crimson Reign is setting up an explanation.

The Knights of Ren decide to break into the Fortress of Darth Vader between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. He spends some time there, which will likely lead to a clash between the Sith Lord and the knights. While they aren't yet Sith, they are much more in tune with the force and are becoming more powerful around this time.

Star Wars Knights of Ren

To set the scene, the Knights of Ren are assisting Qi'ra (Solo: A Star Wars Story) in her quest to overthrow the Sith. Qi'ra is now the leader of the Crimson Dawn (after Darth Maul's death) and has succeeded in transforming it into an organization with eyes, ears, and hands everywhere. Qi'ra has recently become close to the Knights of Ren, and she sends them to Darth Vader's castle to steal an artifact.

They may take whatever else they want. During this same period, the Knights of Ren gained a great deal of knowledge of Sith and Jedi and gained secrets directly from the High Republic itself. There is no coincidence here. They may have stolen it—But what if Darth Vader gave it to them?

This five-part miniseries has revealed so much about Star Wars' setting in just one issue. Darth Vader and the Knights of Ren will no doubt clash in the next comic, due out on February 2, 2022. What if Darth Vader had become more friendly with the group afterward?

Until then, we'll have to wait and see.
