Modern Warfare 2 will feature a single-player campaign alongside multiplayer and DMZ, a new extraction-type mode bearing similarities to Escape from Tarkov.
Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Setting
According to Activision and Infinity Ward, the Modern Warfare 2 campaign will see players visiting a range of locations across the world. Ranging from Mexico to the Middle East, Task Force 141 attempts to take down a drug cartel known as Las Alamas.
It wouldn't be the first time the Modern Warfare series has appeared on the continent. 2009's Modern Warfare 2 famously features the 141 chasing down a high-value target through the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.
Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Characters
So far, we know that several members of Task Force 141 are returning in 2022's Modern Warfare 2. Here's a complete list of characters appearing in the Modern Warfare 2 campaign:
- Captain Price
- Kate Laswell
Rumours suggest Farah from 2019's Modern Warfare is returning in some capacity alongside an unknown character voiced by Warren Kole. Perhaps they're voicing the main antagonist? Only time will tell.
Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Missions
Media that attended a Modern Warfare 2 preview in Los Angeles saw four campaign missions in action. Here's a full breakdown of what was shown. In addition, Summer Games Fest shared the first look at Operation Dark Water. Check out the video below.
Operation Dark Water
Those familiar with the Modern Warfare series will recognise the Wet Work name but in Modern Warfare 2, this particular mission demonstrates new swimming and water mechanics.
Set in the darkness of Amsterdam, players take control of Gaz who, alongside Price, attempts to determine who is behind the smuggling of goods to Al Qatala.
The mission showcases a range of different features including underwater shooting and a ledge hang suggesting there are many ways to eliminate the opposition.
This mission takes place under the cover of darkness following the crash of a helicopter nearby. Players use night vision to take down any nearby targets before securing the wreckage.
Soon after, a large group of hostiles surrounds the wreckage. The mission ends with a rocket hitting the downed chopper.
Vehicle missions are nothing new in a Call of Duty campaign. In Modern Warfare 2, the unnamed mission includes brand-new vehicle mechanics that allow players to shoot out of windows and climb on the roof.
Tower takes place within a major city and begins with players rappelling down the side of a building. You can choose whether to scale the building head-first or feet-first.
According to CharlieINTEL, the mission "allows players to tackle it in their own way," suggesting players can utilise a variety of techniques to complete the objective.
In addition, Infinity Ward says the campaign will contain a mission similar to All Ghillied Up from Call of Duty 4. The developer says players will use a ghillie suit alongside Price and pick off opponents with a sniper. Like All Ghillied Up, the weather will influence bullet trajectory.
