  • Quick Answer: A rumored exclusivity deal between Xbox and Rockstar Games for Grand Theft Auto 6's streaming rights will happen in November.

Update: Xbox's CSO (Chief Security Officer) responded to The Verge's report on social media stating:

While the excitement for GTAVI and XBOX is great to see, it has also led to some misreporting. We are looking forward to launching GTAVI on XBOX November 19, though the game will not be streaming exclusively or to PC.

Original story:

Xbox has scored a massive exclusivity deal with Rockstar Games: exclusive game streaming rights for Grand Theft Auto 6. This means that if the deal becomes official, you’ll only be able to stream the game via Xbox’s cloud gaming service.

The initial report by The Verge states that Xbox CEO Asha Sharma sent an internal message to employees, informing them that the company is preparing a deal that no one else in the industry has landed with Rockstar.

Cloud gaming may not have taken the industry by storm as many believed it would during the early years of the technology being around, but there are still plenty of reliable services offering gaming via streaming. Some of the most popular include Nvidia’s GeForce Now and Amazon Luna. The PS Portal, PlayStation’s handheld companion, can also leverage cloud gaming, but it’s mostly built as remote play hardware that uses a network’s Wi-Fi, so it’s likely this won’t be affected by the upcoming exclusivity deal.

This upcoming deal is likely the reason why Xbox changed their cloud gaming offerings via Game Pass, capping Ultimate members' usage to just 15 hours per month. The benefit, if you can call it that, is that the option to purchase a set amount of hours will become available to everyone, even if they’re not a Game Pass subscriber.

Both the exclusivity deal and the changes to cloud gaming are set to happen this November. It’s a complete coincidence, it seems, that Grand Theft Auto 6 releases on the 19th of that very same month.
