It didn't take long for the quote to go viral, with some praising the new addition and many praying it wasn't true. Not long after, ConcernedApe addressed the matter himself on X (Twitter), stating the rumors are false and he wasn't adding adultery to Stardew Valley.

In one tweet, he claims the quotes were taken out of context and that in the interview, it's clear that he wasn't actually adding that to the game. He was speaking theoretically about how if adultery were added, it wouldn't be a consequence-free action.

He revealed the only thing he considered adding was breaking up the married couples in the game, which are Pierre/Caroline and Robin/Demetrius. However, he opted not to do this because of how serious it would be, plus a ton of work would be needed to shift the tone of the game.
