  • Quick Answer: Jailbreaking consoles preserves original hardware gameplay experiences while protecting user digital libraries against server shutdowns, platform restrictions, and disc degradation.

The modern era of gaming has certainly become more chaotic as of late. You can say it all started when Sony announced that they're heading towards an all-digital video game future, and since then, people have been doing what they can to prevent a future where only one side dictates what you can own and play.

Some have considered buying and preserving a collection of physical discs, ensuring they always maintain ownership of whatever it is they want to enjoy even in the future. Others have considered the path of emulation, either downloading those which already exist or helping create ones like that for the PS5, securing themselves a vast library to play on their PC without the need for a console.

Both are very good options for preserving video games, but there is another that I believe is better: jailbreaking. For those of you who don't know what that is, jailbreaking is the act of tampering with hardware to remove its restrictions. Essentially, you can pretty much do anything you want with whatever you've jailbroken.

The downside is that if you're ever caught by the console's security system, such as when going online or doing a system update, it could result in consequences like getting banned from accessing features that prevent you from playing. It is a risk, but one that more than many are happy to take.

As for why I think it's one of the best methods for preserving video games, it's because it's the only method that lets you enjoy the experience of playing through a console. Being able to emulate whatever you want on your PC will always be amazing, as you'll essentially have an unlimited supply of games to play. However, no matter how hard it tries, it will never be able to replicate the feeling of playing on official hardware.

It's important to preserve video games, but it's equally important to preserve the charm of playing on an actual console, even with all its flaws and imperfections. You won't be able to do so if you go the emulation route, so it's always best to consider jailbreaking. Another reason jailbreaking is the better preservation method is that it can be seen as a more secure way to protect your games on console.

Obtaining and using physical discs will always be good for ensuring you have a way to play even if you refuse to use online services, but there's an issue with that. One is that they're not exactly cheap. If you're going for a physical collection, you'll need a lot of money, as modern titles can get quite expensive. This is also true for retro games, as they're usually sold at prices that go way beyond what they used to cost.

Another thing about going physical is that they're very prone to degradation. If you're collecting a lot of discs, chances are you won't be able to maintain all of them. Failing to clean them or check on their current state could lead to their permanent loss. Also, things out of your control, like accidents that result in broken discs, can happen, making owning physical media somewhat risky.

But all those will be non-issues if you go the path of jailbreaking. Doing so means you only have to worry about routine maintenance on one item rather than many, making it much more convenient for you. Also, everything will be stored in one place, like on your jailbroken PS5 or Xbox, ensuring you know where all your games are at all times.

But why do that when emulating on PC does the same thing? Well, again, it's so you can still maintain the feeling of playing on official hardware while also enjoying additional advantages that make for an even better experience. That said, I do understand why some people are hesitant about jailbreaking their consoles. If it breaks, they lose everything, and they can't rely on the support system of major video game companies to fix it.

Despite that, it's still worth jailbreaking the consoles, as all you have to do to prevent issues is to provide a single item with enough care. I would say that's a very reasonable tradeoff for guaranteeing you enjoy all the games you want and ensuring you keep what you own for as long as you desire.

Jailbreaking consoles may not be the most ethical thing, especially if you're still planning to support companies like Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. However, given the current state of gaming, we might just need to do it. Nobody wants a world where they could potentially lose everything they've purchased throughout the years to the companies that they thought had their best interests in mind, so you can think of the method as a precaution. It's the best way to capture the spirit of gaming while also protecting it, so consider jailbreaking your consoles in the future.
