Vince Zampella, an established developer in the FPS genre of video games and many other franchises, tragically died in a car crash.
As per the NBC Los Angeles report, the developer's car was driving on a scenic road in the San Gabriel Mountains, north of Los Angeles. The California Highway Patrol explained that the car veered off the road at one point, hit a concrete barrier, and a passenger was ejected.
The driver got trapped inside the car fire, inevitably dying because of it, while the ejected passenger was transported to a hospital. The passenger ended up dying at the hospital.
The crash was reported at around 12:45 on Monday, December 22. No more details have been shared at the time of writing, and it's unknown if Zampella was the driver or a passenger.
The legendary developer was very influential in the video game scene, especially for the FPS genre. He was one of the founders of Infinity Ward, along with Jason West and Grant Collier. The studio went on to develop the first Call of Duty game for Activision and also developed the massively successful Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2 under his leadership.

After a breakdown with Activision, the developer founded his own studio, Respawn Entertainment, which was acquired by EA. The studio launched a brand-new franchise with Titanfall, then moved on to other projects like Apex Legends and the Star Wars Jedi series.
In 2021, a year after taking a leading position at DICE, Zampella was put in charge of the Battlefield franchise, leading the charge on Battlefield 6's development after the disappointing launch of Battlefield 2042. This concluded a few months ago when the game launched, becoming one of the best-selling titles in 2025.
Rest in peace, Vince Zampella, and we extend our condolences to his family and loved ones.
