When playing any of the mainline Pokemon games, you're always placed in the shoes of a youngster with the usual ambition of becoming the very best in the region. It makes sense that the controlled protagonist is like that, considering that the eyes of the young help people feel that they're embarking on a brand-new journey that they can look forward to.
However, considering that the franchise has been going on for nearly three decades, perhaps it's time to change that. If Pokemon really wants to give its fans a treat, then what it should consider doing is creating a game wherein the protagonist is not a pre-teen or teenager, but one who's on the much older side.
This is something that I think should happen, as it would make sense, given the type of fans it would appeal to. Again, Pokemon has been around for a long time, and since it released its first game, it has been able to capture the hearts of many. Until now, a large number of people have remained loyal since the beginning, and continue to enjoy every new entry that gets released.
These are the dedicated fans, longtime lovers of the franchise who've grown up together with it. There's no doubt that there are many of them, and by this point, they are likely in their early to late 30s, or even in their 40s. The best thing that Nintendo and Game Freak can do is to acknowledge them for their love and support, and what better way to do that than by creating a Pokemon game featuring a much older protagonist than the norm?
By doing so, not only will it be a great love letter to longtime fans, but it will also likely capture their attention in a way that has never been experienced. These people, upon receiving news of a mainline entry whose protagonist best reflects how they're recognized as loyal supporters, could express emotions that allow them to show why it's worth becoming a fan of Pokemon, which is great for them and the brand.
Additionally, having a much older main character also allows for a new perspective on the usual Pokemon narrative. Instead of coming through the fresh eyes of the young, it would be through someone who has already experienced the Pokemon world.
The change would allow for an interesting story, one that veterans can appreciate as it's something different from what they're used to. Newcomers can also enjoy it, as it gives them an idea of what it's like to be in the position of someone who has been playing the games for so long, an angle which is yet to be explored.
All in all, the idea of having an older main protagonist is something that should be heavily considered for the next Pokemon game, given what it can do for the fans and for the franchise. Perhaps it may happen in the next mainline entry, but for now, we'll have to wait and see.
