  • Quick Answer: The gelatinous cube companion Phranque and the sword-bound ribbon Rue draw directly from Shinto mythology, heavily mirroring the friction-free Sayafushi blade setup seen in Bleach.

You might have seen a cube similar to what’s in God of War Laufey in your favorite anime.

While many were excited to hear that the new GoW game centers on Kratos’s wife, Faye, people became more intrigued about the appearance of Phranque, a gelatinous cosmo cube that accompanies Faye in her journey.

But did you know that the cube (and even the sword featured in God of War Laufey) has appeared in another popular media? Let's discuss.

One of the most intriguing things in God of War Laufey is Phranque, a talking jello-like cosmic cube. He accompanies Faye in her journey through the afterlife of the gods.

The appearance of the cube and ribbon has left many online confused. As it’s been revealed that God of War Laufey explores other mythologies, many wondered how a cube could be part of a country’s folklore.

Well, it appears its roots can be traced back to Japanese Shinto mythology. In fact, a similar cube and sword appear in the manga and anime Bleach.

Oetsu Nimaiya wields a sword called the Sayafushi, a sword that is so sharp and has no friction that it can’t be sheathed, as every cover immediately breaks. To protect it, it’s stored in a jello-like cube.

In Bleach, the sword is so OP that it never chips or scratches, and blood immediately slides off the metal. The danger of the weapon goes hand-in-hand with the durability of the cube.

Perhaps, like in Bleach, Rue and Phranque will work similarly to help Faye in her journey?
