The appearance of the cube and ribbon has left many online confused. As it’s been revealed that God of War Laufey explores other mythologies, many wondered how a cube could be part of a country’s folklore.

Well, it appears its roots can be traced back to Japanese Shinto mythology. In fact, a similar cube and sword appear in the manga and anime Bleach.

Oetsu Nimaiya wields a sword called the Sayafushi, a sword that is so sharp and has no friction that it can’t be sheathed, as every cover immediately breaks. To protect it, it’s stored in a jello-like cube.
