The Expanse Osiris Reborn

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn keeps getting better and better with each announcement. In their recent devblog titled “Bringing Space to Life,” Owlcat Games actually hired a former NASA Astronaut to help work on their game.

Former NASA Astronaut and ISS Commander Leroy Chiao lends his spacefaring expertise to The Expanse: Osiris Reborn’s world, making its science and physics much more realistic.

Going by the devblog, fans should expect Osiris Reborn to remain as grounded as ever. Almost all of The Expanse’s worlds take place in the empty vacuum of space, so it’s no surprise Owlcat Games is prioritizing this feature the most. Bullets will have reduced trajectory to abide by the void’s rules, making firefights in space difficult to navigate.

The world in The Expanse isn’t limited only to Earthly adventures; the call of the void beckons as humanity reaches for the stars, harnessing resources from Jovian moons and the asteroid belt. Players travel to iconic places from the Amazon Prime series and books, including Ceres Station and the hydroponic gardens of Ganymede. This is exactly why Owlcat Games is working hard to keep its science realistic: so it won't disappoint hardcore fans of the franchise.

Shootouts in space feel realistic.

While The Expanse series is built purely on science fiction, it’s one of the most realistic depictions of space. Intense dogfights between Donnager-class ships have actual thrust, and PDC canons respect Newtonian laws. James S.A. Corey’s Hugo Award-winning series respects the laws of physics. There are no lightspeed ships capable of thrusting humanity into the far reaches of the galaxy.

Often described as Game of Thrones in space for its mix of political intrigue and well-written characters, The Expanse series has amassed a cult following since its release on SyFy in December 2015. After its untimely cancellation on the network, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos salvaged the series’ rights, continuing with seasons 4 to 6 on Amazon Prime.

Now, this video game adaptation will continue in the franchise’s rich science fiction world. Osiris Reborn will take place between the events of Leviathan Wakes and Caliban’s War, the series’s first two books. Fans shouldn’t expect any James Holden or Amos Burton here, as this game will feature an original cast of characters not shown in the movies and novels. But who knows? Maybe we might see a brief cameo from our favorite Rocinante crew.

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn still has a long way to go before its launch, but it’s already shaping up to be the perfect game to fill the void of Mass Effect’s long absence. In the meantime, we can revel in the fact that this game remains true to its roots, respecting the series’ grounded science and its loyal community.
