The Steam Deck 2 has been something fans have asked about since, well, Valve’s original handheld was first released. Everyone’s always curious about upgrades to existing hardware, as fans who lived through the Switch’s long life before Nintendo announced its successor know. A rumor claims Valve’s new handheld has a release window, but it’s one that won’t come out anytime soon.

According to Kepler_L2 on NeoGAF (via Gaming Leaks and Rumors subreddit), fans can expect to see the Steam Deck 2 in 2028. That is a few years away, and we don’t even know if this rumor can be trusted, despite this insider’s track record. Honestly, if this is true, this should be a sign for fans to enjoy Valve’s powerful system while it's still relevant.

No Steam Deck 2? No Problem

If the rumor is true, fans have plenty of time to get a regular Steam Deck and enjoy this handheld for a few years. Gamers who have only had a Switch will be impressed by the power this has. If these fans have a Switch 2, Valve’s console is a perfect complement to it, thanks to the large number of PC games not available on Nintendo’s hardware.

Gamers who care about game preservation will also be happy to know that emulation is very good. The Steam Deck can play any retro system from the NES to PS3 and even some Nintendo Switch games. It’s also the best way to play some classic PSP and PS2 games, as there are hundreds of forgotten gems on these systems.

Do We Already Have a Steam Deck 2?

One other reason why fans might not have to wait impatiently for the Steam Deck 2 is due to all of the powerful PC handhelds that are readily available. We have the Lenovo Legion GO, Asus ROG Ally, and MSI Claw. Microsoft is teaming up with Asus to release the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X, which could be the next big handhelds.

These systems are arguably more powerful than Valve’s machine, though their OS might not be as gamer-friendly. Steam has made its OS readily available for these other systems, but that can still come with bugs that need to be patched out. Regardless, there are plenty of gaming machines that can keep players busy until the Steam Deck 2 comes out.

Fans can also get Nintendo’s Switch 2, because that’s the new hotness right now. Anyway, get a Steam Deck; it’s filled with games, and players won’t regret getting one.
