  • Quick Answer: Star Wars: Galactic Racer is an upcoming racing game that features diverse vehicles, a roguelite progression system, and unique environmental challenges.

Racing fans, we’ve gotten some decent experiences so far this year. Just between Forza Horizon 6 and Screamer, there are dozens of hours worth of gaming content at our disposal. That being said, Star Wars: Galactic Racer looks like a serious competitor for best racer of the year.

On June 23, a ton of gameplay videos and impressions dropped, mostly showcasing the various tracks, the level of customization, and other key elements the game will boast.

Let’s get one thing out of the way first, though, the game doesn’t entirely revolve around podracing. That said, there is podracing in this game, including a glorious rendition of the iconic Tatooine race track, Sebulba shenanigans included.

The fact that the game didn’t just commit to a specific type of racer is fantastic for variety’s sake in my eyes. You get to do so much more than crashing podracers, as you’ll also get to use things like speeder bikes or landspeeders, to name a few.

Another incredibly interesting take on gameplay is that, according to a few previews, including IGN’s, the progression system is built like a roguelite: you require League Tokens to compete in different race circuits. If you lose the Token, you’ll have to start over again; however, you’ll get to keep previous unlocks to make next runs easier.

This game was clearly made by ex-Burnout devs, and the abilities you can get clearly show off their arcade-like approach to racers. A few I could spot from the previews include a perk that grants extra speed on each successful takedown or gaining Shields after activating an ability.

A great gameplay modifier that piqued my interest was how the team implemented weather into the mix. There will be certain tracks that are on extremely hot planets with magma oozing from the soil that can overheat your vehicle. On the other hand, cold planets can make you go slower, forcing you to drive through heaters to avoid getting completely frozen.

Beyond racing, you’ll be able to explore all the planets on foot. Of course, not in an open-world type of way, but rather small paddocks located near each track. Here you’ll be able to interact with other racers, talk with different NPCs that really add to the Star Wars experience, and customize both your racer and vehicle with different cosmetic options. You’ll also have pre-set builds for racers, with different perks that can boost a specific type of play.

While I haven’t played the game myself, I’m just so excited to give it a shot based on everything we could spot from the previews shared all across social media.

A reminder that Star Wars: Galactic Racer releases this October 6, available on Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, and PC.
