It feels like the PS5 hasn’t really taken off, and yet, Sony has already teased that the PlayStation 6 is being worked on. Granted, we all know that these console makers are always planning their next step, but Sony’s current-gen system feels like it hasn’t hit its stride yet. Regardless, we’re getting a successor to the console, and rumors claim it will copy the Nintendo Switch.

Moore’s Law is Dead (MLID) has leaked details of this next-generation PlayStation, claiming there will be a low-powered version, a dockable handheld variation, and a main powerhouse. Naturally, most fans are talking about the dockable handheld, which is incredibly similar to the Switch and Switch 2, making a lot of gamers talk.

While fans can make jokes about the PS5 not having games and the PS6 copying the Switch, this writer thinks Sony loses nothing by imitating Nintendo. Their credibility? Sure, but fans love the PSP and PS Vita, so going back to their handheld routes feels like a worthwhile endeavor.

Handhelds Are So Back

Pretty much everyone will tell you that the Nintendo Switch brought handheld gaming back, which led to a number of handheld PCs like Valve’s Steam Deck coming out as well. Sony mingled a bit with this, releasing the cloud-based PlayStation Portal, while Xbox is teaming with Asus for the ROG Xbox Ally.

Now that there’s a Switch 2 available and an Xbox Ally coming, it only makes sense for the PlayStation 6 to follow suit.

And why shouldn’t Sony dip its head into handheld territory? Once again, these portable gaming systems have never been more popular than they are right now. Competition is always good, and Sony could end up releasing more classic games in addition to their modern titles in order to fill up this system’s library.

Can Sony Make it Work?

The real question about Sony’s PS6 is whether this company can actually pull this off. While Sony has seen success with the PSP, this company quickly gave up on the excellent PS Vita. It felt like the company barely supported this console, only developing a neat Uncharted title and some PS2 remasters.

Admittedly, they could afford to do this because the PlayStation 4 was selling gangbusters. It was also the company’s main focus, so putting all of that effort into this console made sense. This writer also thinks specifically making this handheld console part of the PlayStation 6 family would add prestige and importance right away.

Will Sony make it work? The company’s track record says yes, so here’s hoping. If the PS5 can sell millions of copies without any must-have exclusives, we imagine a handheld PS6 will do the same.
