- Quick Answer: A Sonic mural in London is promoting a running route in the shape of the character to celebrate its 35th anniversary.
Sonic is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, and after a mural appeared in London, many started to believe this had to do with an upcoming game announcement.
User AnimaMach first posted about the mural on X, having spotted it in East London, as you can see below:
However, the news is out, and we now know that the mural was, in fact, painted to promote a running route. SEGA has announced the Sonic Speed Circuit, a 10km route that goes through London, forming the character's shape.

The aforementioned mural is part of seven illustrations that will be painted across the route to promote the circuit. SEGA has commissioned illustrators who have worked with Disney, Marvel, Netflix, Pixar, and DC to work on the paintings, meaning no AI was used for this.
The illustrations will be up until Saturday, June 28, and here are the locations where you can see them:
- 30 Redchurch Street, London, E2 7DP
- Holywell Lane, London, E2CA 3PQ
- Great Eastern Wall, London, E2CA 3EJ
- Ebor Street, London, E1 6AW
Anyone can join the running club on Strava (using this link), and all participants who complete the circuit throughout June will get a chance to win some of the Sonic 35th anniversary merchandise.
Sonic officially turns 35 on June 21st, as that is when the first Sonic the Hedgehog game was released for the SEGA Genesis in PAL regions. The title arrived two days later for North America, and the following month in Japan.
SEGA is expected to continue the celebrations throughout the whole month, but a new main title hasn't been announced as of yet. With several gaming presentations happening this month, there is still a possibility of seeing something other than a remake or a remaster.
