Skyrim Grandma Announces She’s Retiring Once More

Skyrim Grandma herself, Shirley Curry, has revealed that she’s retiring again from producing videos for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

The 89-year-old gamer who charmed over a million subscribers with her Skyrim tales says it’s time to hang up her sword for good.

In her latest video, simply titled “My ‘Goodbye’ to Skyrim,” she explains that the energy and joy she once felt when inventing new characters and narratives has faded.

Even when she tries to start fresh, she now finds herself bored after only a few episodes.

Why Is She Retiring Now?

What really seems to have pushed this decision is how her audience has changed.

Curry says the conversation-heavy community she loved has mostly been replaced by younger viewers leaving short greetings like “hi” or “love you, grandma” before moving on.

While she’s grateful for affection, she wanted a space where fans discussed the adventures unfolding on screen. These short greetings feel empty compared to the dialogue she used to have with long-time viewers.

For someone who started sharing videos to connect with other players and tell stories together, the shift has been discouraging.

After uploading Skyrim videos for well over ten years, Curry also says the routine has worn her down and the game no longer gives her fresh ideas.

Starting a new storyline always seems to lead to only a few videos before interest is lost. Age is naturally a factor too, as she is soon to turn 90, and she wants to spend her time and energy differently.

This isn’t her first attempt to step back. She said she would retire in 2024, came back briefly with Oblivion Remastered earlier this year, and drifted back to Skyrim, but this time she sounds more certain.

Will She Still Be Online?

Even so, Shirley isn’t disappearing from the internet.

She says she will still stop by now and then with vlogs for her older followers, the longtime viewers who once had real conversations with her.

She encouraged viewers to keep up with her elsewhere, mentioning her smaller faith-based YouTube channel and a Skyrim mod that lets players recruit her in-game.

Bethesda has previously said she’ll appear in some way in The Elder Scrolls VI, whenever that game finally arrives, so her digital legacy is secure no matter what. Whether she stays retired or returns, Shirley Curry’s influence won’t fade.

She made space for an older voice in gaming, inspired countless players with her warmth and curiosity, and became an icon strong enough that Bethesda pledged to immortalize her in its next Elder Scrolls game.

After nearly 15 years of chronicling Tamriel, she’s earned the right to step back on her own terms — and the gaming world will always remember her as the original Skyrim Grandma.
