When SEGA announced that they were bringing back a number of classic IPs, fans were cautiously optimistic about the news. Revivals tend to be hit or miss, so many were waiting to see what the first product would offer. Thankfully, Shinobi: Art of Vengeance was the first entry into this project, and it looks like these titles stand a chance.

SEGA has been fairly consistent with game releases as of late, with their Yakuza and Sonic games getting decent reviews. The acquisition of Atlus has also led to stellar reviews for Metaphor: ReFantazio. While that’s good news all around, Art of Vengeance is a statement, showing what happens when these classic properties get the love and care they deserve.

Is SEGA Back?

Although SEGA has never been failure-prone, there was a time when the company was relying on partners to do the heavy-lifting when it came to quality. Yakuza and Persona games are almost always going to get positive reviews, while Sonic games tend to get mixed results. Now that Shinobi: Art of Vengeance has proven to be a draw, it might just show how much fans care about these classic SEGA properties.

The company confirmed a while back that Crazy Taxi, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, and Jet Set Radio are getting similar remakes. Rumors claimed that Crazy Taxi could be an open-world online multiplayer game, though that hasn’t been confirmed. While skepticism about the quality of these titles will always linger, Art of Vengeance is already giving them a fighting chance.

What’s Next?

It’s not yet known which classic SEGA property will follow up Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, but we do know they will have to try topping something excellent. Many fans knew Art of Vengeance was going to do well because Lizardcube worked on it, as they worked wonders with Streets of Rage 4. SEGA still hasn’t said who would be working on these other remakes, so players will have to keep their expectations in check.

Still, if these games can keep that classic gameplay loop while looking drop-dead gorgeous, this revival project could end up being a success. This could also lead to more revivals down the line, as more of these games deserve to be brought back. Lord knows how many times Dreamcast loyalists have asked for a Skies of Arcadia remaster, so this project is what these fans are clinging on to.

Even if these other games don’t end up doing well, we’ll always have Shinobi: Art of Vengeance as a reminder of how good these properties can be
