GTA Releasing a Discless Physical Version Makes No Sense

When I first heard that GTA 6 was releasing the physical version without a disc, I thought it was a rumor. One of those insane ones people tout as true on X. However, I soon discovered it was real after reading the announcement on Rockstar Games' website.

I've sat with it for a while, and I'm honestly still flabbergasted at the thought.

In theory, I understand why they would go with digital codes for the physical edition. It's to prevent leaks from surfacing, and Rockstar would have tighter control over what people can access. It also ensures everyone can access the game at the same time on November 19.

But at that point, why even bother with a physical version? So people can collect the box? That's not why people get physical editions. They buy the physical version to collect the discs - to actually have the tangible item in their hands.

I think they should have just stuck with a digital-only purchase. This reduces the friction players are feeling now. The hassle of getting the physical edition, getting a code instead of a disc, figuring out how to redeem it, and THEN downloading the game just feels like too much effort - especially when a physical edition would just require you to put it in the console and immediately play.

Rumors have started circulating that a physical version with a disc would come out a few months after the initial release. If that's the case, it would have been better if they had saved the title of "physical version" for that time. Let people purchase digitally first to prevent the leaks, and announce the physical version with a disc a month later. Doesn't that make more sense?

I know some people share the same sentiments - and I'm also aware that some people will still be purchasing the physical version just for the box. But I can imagine that their choice to go discless will cause digital sales to overshadow physical sales.

Hopefully, Rockstar Games decides to release the disc later down the line, just so that making a physical purchase is actually worth your while.
