  • Quick Answer: A new report suggests Sony may delay the launch of the PlayStation 6 console until 2028 or 2029 due to economic factors.

Don’t expect next-gen gaming consoles anytime soon if reports are to be believed. A new Embracer Group report states that Sony could be opting to delay the launch of the PlayStation 6 beyond 2027 into 2028, and in a worst-case scenario, until 2029.

For those unaware, Embracer Group is a giant conglomerate, owner of multiple gaming studios that include THQ Nordic, Crystal Dynamics, or Eidos. In total, they own 53 studios, so it’s a big deal when such a big presence in the gaming ecosystem insinuates Sony might be delaying the PS6.

The annual report published by Embracer on June 18 states: “Some analysts believe that Sony is now considering pushing back the debut of its next PlayStation console from 2027 to 2028 or even 2029.”

This is, again, nothing new. Everyone who’s mildly interested in the ins and outs of the industry is aware of the current economic landscape, something acknowledged in the report.

“There are some challenges around the volatility of tariffs in the US as well as an impact from the global increase in RAM prices driven by AI. Both factors could potentially have a negative impact on console retail prices, which would, in turn, hamper market growth.”

The current generation of consoles is close to turning eight years old later this year. For context, the previous one (Xbox One and PS4) had a lifespan of roughly seven years. It makes sense that Sony or Microsoft are full steam ahead with the development of the current-gen console succesors, but it’s clear everyone in the industry, from consumers to developers, will have to prepare for what looks to be an inevitable delay in their launches.
