Square Enix is reportedly bringing back the cult classic RPG Drakengard series, originally made famous on the PlayStation 2.
While the publisher has remained tight-lipped about the claim, a well-known insider has supposedly confirmed it.
So, will fans finally see the revival of the dark fantasy franchise after the release of Drakengard 3 in 2014?
Will Square Enix Release Drakengard Series Revival?

Rumors about a revival of the Drakengard series began after the franchise’s official soundtrack was released on Steam and Spotify last week.
According to Dusk Golem, a well-connected insider known for scoops on Resident Evil and other Capcom titles, this isn’t just a random release.
Instead, it appears to serve as a tease for an upcoming announcement later this month related to the series.
If true, ComicBook notes that the announcement could come during the rumored PlayStation State of Play or at the Tokyo Game Show.
However, it remains unclear whether the announcement will focus on Drakengard or NieR, given that NieR is a spin-off of the Drakengard series—especially there have also been rumors that a sequel to NieR: Automata may be unveiled soon.
If the Drakengard series is indeed revived, fans are eager to see a remake or remaster of the original PS2 games, updated with modern graphics and gameplay improvements to meet today’s standards.
They’re also hoping for a new entry or sequel that continues Yoko Taro’s signature storytelling and further expands the series’ dark fantasy world.
Finally, there’s potential for crossovers or expanded connections with the NieR series, featuring the shared universe between the two franchises.
What is Drakengard About?

Known in Japan as Drag-On Dragoon, Drakengard debuted on the PS2 in 2003. The RPG is renowned for its dark, mature storytelling, brutal combat, branching storylines, and multiple endings.
Under the direction of visionary Yoko Taro (except for the second entry), the series developed a dedicated fanbase and laid the groundwork for the NieR series.
NieR, particularly NieR: Automata, propelled the franchise into mainstream popularity, thanks to its philosophical narrative and groundbreaking gameplay.
In fact, Taro himself, who also directed the spin-off, described NieR as the “true Drakengard 3.”
So, although Drakengard concluded over a decade ago, its cult status has continued to grow, and many fans are eagerly anticipating a modern revival today.
