Getting Cubone in Pokemon Pokopia is not for the soft-hearted. Warning, you will cry.

For long-time Pokemon fans, you know the lore behind Cubone. The Pokemon is defined by having lost its mother and wearing her skull as a mask. It's a way for Cubone to remember its mother, and it often cries when hit with grief.

And that doesn't go away in Pokopia. If anything, it doubles down.

How to Unlock Cubone in Pokopia

To get Cubone in Pokopia, you need to make the grave with Flowers habitat in Witherwing Wastelands. Doing so can also get you Marowak.

Find the tombstone in Withering Wastelands. It is located on a cliff southwest of the Pokemon Center. Once you are at the tombstone, place four Wildflowers around it. To do so, use the Rototiller move to pick up Wildflowers and place them on the grave.

Alternatively, you can buy seeds from the PC shop and grow them yourself. To speed up the process, use Bulbasaur's Grow Speciality.

If you do it right, a pop-up will appear that you've restored the habitat successfully. Either Cubone or Marowak will then emerge.

Why Is This So Heartbreaking?

Cubone is known as the "Lonely Pokemon" because it mourns the loss of its mother deeply. Not only does it wear her skull as a helmet, but Cubone also cries when it remembers its mother, often echoing within the skull. Even the moon reminds it of its mom, which causes Cubone to cry in sadness most nights.

When you make the grave with Flowers habitat for Cubone, it is grateful. In conversation, Cubone sadly mentioned that its Mom would've probably liked a place like this too. When nighttime hits, Cubone is often seen sleeping at the grave to stay close to its mother.

It feels bittersweet to create a grave for a character like Cubone in Pokemon Pokopia, someone who is so marked by loss. Maybe this can be seen as a way of reuniting mother and child, but wow, does it sting.
