Quick Answer: Complete "The Ledger of Atonement" quest, retrieve the ledger, and tell the Agonized Maskwalker "This won't absolve you of your sins" to earn the key.

In Phantom Blade Zero, you'll need the Backstreet Courtyard Key to unlock a gated area in Pangzhen. It's vital to complete a major late-game side quest that offers high-tier endgame gear and upgrade materials.

Although it's important, it can be pretty difficult to find. Some players have scoured the entire city - even visited other regions - to try and find the Backstreet Courtyard Key. Well, I'll tell you why it's so hard to find: it's because it's tied to another objective.

Here's how to get the Backstreet Courtyard Key in Phantom Blade Zero.

How to Get the Backstreet Courtyard Key in Phantom Blade Zero

The Backstreet Courtyard Key is tied to a quest titled "The Ledger of Atonement," which is located in the Mountain of Imprisonment.

A character in a forest setting speaks to another character, urging them to find something and bring it back.

Once you reach this area, you'll need to progress until you end up at the Command Platform bell. Here, you will fight Bi Feng, the Giant Saber Commander boss. After you complete the fight, head up the stairway from the arena. Here, you'll reach the Agonized Maskwalker and a puppet sitting behind him.

Interact with the Maskwalker, and he will ask you to retrieve his ledger. This will kickstart the quest. The ledger can be found as you progress through the Mountain of Imprisonment.

When you reach the Shrine Outer Gate bell, you'll end up fighting the boss Kui Yanyan, The Deranged. After you defeat the boss, head to the back of the arena to get the Bloodstained Diary. Afterward, head down the ladder in the boss area. You'll eventually reach a cavern with a horde of enemies. Beat them and enter the cave at the back that is blocked by wooden crates.

Once inside the cave, take the stairway on the right. This will lead you to the Ledger of Atonement. Head back to the Agonized Maskwalker and hand him the item. Now, this is the part most players get wrong. After handing him the item, you will be presented with two dialog choices that will impact the outcome of the quest:

Never mind. Leave him be.
This won't absolve you of your sins.

A character in armor speaking to another character in a foggy, forested environment, with text on the screen indicating a conversation about absolution and sins.

Pick "This won't absolve you of your sins." This option will lead to a boss fight with the Agonized Maskwalker. After you defeat him, you will receive the Sha-Chi Amber Fragment and the Backstreet Courtyard Key.

Pro tip: make sure to talk to the pupper that was sitting on a crate behind the Maskwalker. Doing so will reward you with the Bloodstained Necklace and add the Bai Xue quest to your journal.
