After many years of rumors here and there, Blizzard has finally announced something many have been expecting: Overwatch on mobile... kinda.
Overwatch Rush is a brand-new top-down hero shooter based on the popular franchise. In other words, this is an entirely new title, completely separate from the main game and not a port in any way.
Likewise, Rush is being developed by an entirely different team and not Team 4, Overwatch's development team. This means that the main game won't be affected, and Team 4 will continue to focus on bringing new content as they always have.
On top of a different perspective, the game features a 4v4 format, one player less on each team than the main game's standard 5v5.
To go with this announcement, Blizzard posted the following gameplay, which shows us a full match in an early development build:
As you can see, the gameplay is a classic Control match on what appears to be a different version of Busan, and we can see many of the usual heroes we already know, from Mercy healing in the backline to Reinhardt holding the front.
Some abilities seem adjusted to work in the new top-down perspective, and others seem to work exactly as they do in the normal game. It would be interesting to see how all the heroes get adapted.
At the moment, there is no release date for Overwatch Rush, but Blizzard also announced that the dev team is preparing to test the game in select countries and regions, so we could see a test period sometime soon.
