I have been playing Marvel Rivals since its release back in December of 2024, and to this day, I continue to have fun with it. However, whenever I play matches, I always have this feeling of dread when the hero-picking phase comes up.
The reason for this is that there is always the possibility of seeing a Spider-Man player, either on my team or on the enemy's. Regardless of how enjoyable Marvel Rivals may be, the high-flying masked menace can either make it better or worse, which is why I have a love-hate relationship with the hero.
But what is it about this particular Duelist that makes him an entity that cannot be ignored? What is it that allows him to have a huge effect on one's in-game psyche? Well, to start, it's the fact that he's one of, if not the most, difficult characters to play.

Spider-Man, being hard to use and even harder to master, can mean that whoever plays the hero during a match can either be amazing with him or the absolute worst. There is usually no in-between with the two, and I say this with full confidence based on the many matches I've played where I have witnessed him on either side.
So, whenever he is on any team, it's always a coin flip on whether he'll be the reason for victory or defeat, and that can be very frustrating for everyone. One would say that seeing him in Marvel Rivals' casual matches isn't so bad, given that it's where people play to learn and understand more about their heroes, while wins matter less. However, I would argue it's just as bad as witnessing the hero being picked in competitive games.
The reason for this is that if it's someone practicing the hero, it usually means a five-against-six situation for the team that has that player, which isn't exactly fun even during unranked matches. On the other hand, if the Spider-Man user is a master with the character, then those facing him who are looking to play the game for an enjoyable time will have the worst possible experience instead.
It's also a character who can have a serious effect on the mood of a team, making everyone either happy or angry to have him, depending on performance, which I both love and hate. If everyone sees him doing well, they'll likely be inclined to do their best too, which feels amazing. However, if he's underperforming, his team will have to pick up the slack to try to avoid a loss, and that's never fun.

Still, I will always give credit where credit is due to those who choose to pick up Spider-Man, as it looks like NetEase Games did everything possible to make him difficult to use. That won't stop me, or likely everyone else, from praising or ridiculing the hero's user, given the impact he can have, but there is at least an acknowledgment of that person's bravery in using Marvel Rivals' most difficult character.
Spider-Man is a great hero who makes many matches interesting, and regardless of whether I love or hate him, he's able to bring out emotions in players that no other character does, making the game more enjoyable and memorable.
