My Last Straw: Why I Threw in the Towel on Marvel Rivals' Solo Queue Nightmare

I never expected a day would come that I’d consider quitting Marvel Rivals. As a solo player that’s been constantly grinding since the game’s release back in December 2024, I never encountered any issues with its matchmaking until now.

Despite how many times NetEase continues to fix its matchmaking, there seems to be a glaring issue that they forget: a better system for solo players. They have already tried different remedies by limiting the number of stacked teams per higher-elo, but this is merely a band-aid fix that doesn’t address the game’s ongoing matchmaking issues.

I don’t consider myself a good player, but I’m certainly not bad either. As a Grandmaster-Celestial player, things have turned for the worse as I keep getting matches that go against the concept of a “team shooter.” Why am I seeing a Lord Daredevil getting negative K:D? Why did our only healer swap to a Duelist? Where’s my second tank? Why do we have healers like Adam Warlock and Rocket Raccoon in our team with zero defensive counter strategies? I have no idea.

Get this Daredevil off me.

The game’s matchmaking system has exhausted me. While I do get win streaks every now and then, the game would randomly decide to put the matchmaking in reverse, making my next matches losing streak that knows no end.

I know what you’re saying, “It’s time to git gud.” But this is simply not a psychological case. No matter how much NetEase denies it, there is a clear issue with its matchmaking system that forces one bad player into a match, risking the entire team in the process. NetEase has explained all its matchmaking in a tell-all video months ago, and it’s clear why its matchmaking isn’t perfect.

This is usually where I advocate for a Role Queue option, but most Marvel Rivals players aren’t really ready for that conversation.

Blade isn't even that good.

I guess this is the time I throw in the towel with Marvel Rivals for now. I’ve been forced to play Magneto, Doctor Strange and Emma Frost for the past few months. As a tank main, I see no problem with that, but as someone who loves to fill other roles as well, I don’t always get to see players try being a Vanguard for once and it’s making me go crazy.

Of course, this isn’t REALLY the end for me. I’d still pick up Marvel Rivals when a competent team invites me over, but it doesn’t usually happen. Unfortunately, Marvel Rivals’ popularity has waned and some of my closest friends aren’t even playing it anymore.

Luckily, I still got Overwatch 2 installed, and it looks like the game’s latest season is looking fun.
