Over the weekend, users online discovered that Build a Rocket Boy, the Edinburgh-based studio behind the 2025 game MindsEye, has entered administration.
This comes just days after reports online suggested that the studio was gearing up to close down. However, entering administration in the UK means the studio will see its existing management dismissed, while a new team will come in to assess the situation and decide whether to continue operations or close down completely.
The studio has been on a downward trajectory ever since MindsEye released in June 2025. The game was marketed as a "GTA killer", with many ex-Rockstar developers behind it. It gained traction among the trades, but once reviewers got a chance to try it, the marketing facade faded out.
The game was a letdown in many aspects, as it didn't offer a truly open-world experience, the campaign was short and linear, had many hilarious bugs, and animations/character's expressions looked rough and rushed.
The story took a crazy turn when the studio's co-CEOs, Leslie Benzies and Mark Gerhard, started claiming that an unknown external party was sabotaging their game and fueling a smear campaign around it.
The paranoia went so far that management even installed a surveillance software called Teramind on their employees' computers to monitor them without consent.
In an internal meeting at the start of 2026, Mark Gerhard claimed they found out "American" company Ritual Network (which is in fact a UK company) was behind the sabotage efforts, spending around $1 million on several influencers, three journalists, and even some of the studio's employees.
The studio even released a mission based on this conspiracy theory in April 2026 through the game's first expansion titled Blacklisted, but it was also received poorly, with outlets like Polygon simply calling it "boring."
