- Quick answer: Pokemon Champions launches April 8, 2026, as a battle-focused F2P title allowing Pokemon HOME transfers, daily temporary recruits, and new Mega abilities like Meganium's "Mega Sol."
It can be argued that more than the collecting aspect and the grand stories, battling is what players love about Pokemon, and it seems Pokemon Champions will satisfy every combat-craved Pokemon fan all over the world. Earlier today, we received a 6-minute overview trailer, and you can bet we'll be covering everything we know so far here.
For the uninitiated, Pokemon Champions is a new free-to-play title that will focus on one thing and one thing only. Pokemon battles! This game allows players to prepare Pokemon teams and compete online against countless trainers globally in short-burst, but extremely exciting Poke-battles.
The overview trailer left almost nothing to the imagination about how packed it was with information about systems, mechanics, and more! Some of the things the trailer has showcased include the Pokemon recruitment system, the in-game currency, new Pokemon abilities, and, of course, the release date.
If you're like us, and excited to finally play this game, keep reading and enjoy building the hype with us!
Pokemon Recruitment System

Of course, to battle, you need battle-ready Pokemon and according to the trailer, we have two ways to get some. First is by connecting the Nintendo Switch system Pokemon titles and/or Pokemon GO to the Pokemon Home app and transferring your recruits there. Once transferred, just connect the Home app to Pokemon Champions and continue using your favorites.
But for those who don't have the earlier RPG titles, no need to worry because you can also "recruit" new ones. Once per day, you can choose one Pokemon from a random selection to add to your roster. But do take note that the Pokemon you got from this method are not permanent, and will only be usable for seven days or a week.

In respect of tradition, Pokemon Champions' battle system doesn't stray from what we know about battling. We still get to bring 6 Pokemon, allow them to hold items, switch out if needed, and have 4 moves each. You win like how you always win in Pokemon, which is by defeating all 6 of your opponent's Pocket Monsters.
One thing that stood out in the trailer is how good the animations and the graphics looked, guaranteed to make each second of your matches feel so alive and thrilling. We also know that Mega Evolving is guaranteed part of the game when we saw our Legends Z-A final evos in their Mega Forms.
New Pokemon Abilities

Speaking of Legends Z-A, we all know by now that Pokemon in that title didn't have abilities but now that we're able to migrate Pokemon like Mega Meganium, Mega Feraligatr, and Mega Emboar, to Pokemon Champions, they have been bestowed new abilities, or at least two of them did.
Mega Emboar gets the Mold Breaker ability which isn't anything new but Mega Meganium gets the brand new ability, Mega Sol, that allows the gentle green giant to use its sunlight-dependent moves as if the sunlight is harsh. Mega Feraligtr, on the other hand, also gets the new Dragonize ability that turns Normal-type moves into boosted Dragon-type. Finally!
Battle Formats and Modes

So far, in terms of format, we know there will be two, which are Singles and Doubles, but it is in the game modes that we received a good variety. We have Ranked Battles to test our skills with evenly-ranked trainers as we aim for the highest tier. There's also the stakes-free Casual Mode, and the Private Room to battle anyone who has a room ID.
One exciting mode announced is the Online Competition mode, with interesting preset rules that change every season. Either way, we are sure we'll be testing and dominating every single one.
In-Game Currency

Now, this is where customization comes in, and when we say customization, we mean customization! Winning battles in Pokemon Champions will reward you with VP or Victory Points. These points are the currency we'll be spending to basically customize our Pokemon to greatness.
VP will allow us to swap our Pokemon's moves, change their nature, modify abilities, and fully alter their stats. VP also plays a role in improving our recruiting experience because VP can be used to recruit more Pokemon and permanently. Lastly, VP can be used to buy held items, battle items like Mega Stones, battle poses, and even battle music! Talk about value!

Being a free-to-play game, some people are concerned with how much "pay-to-win" this title might become, but we can only hope for the best.
Pokemon Champions is releasing on April 08, 2026, and will be available on the Nintendo Switch family of systems. Unfortunately, we don't have a date yet for the mobile release, but again, we can only keep our fingers crossed. We can't wait to finally try this and hope you are too!
