One of 2022’s scariest horror games is making its way to the big screen. Iron Lung, created by Dusk and Gloomwood’s David Szymanski, is getting a film adaptation set to release on January 30, 2026.
YouTuber Mark Fischbach, also known online as Markiplier, makes his directorial debut with this movie. Alongside original creator David Szymanski, the Iron Lung film is set to expand on the game’s bizarre and seemingly Lovecraftian sci-fi universe.
Iron Lung Story and Movie Details

Iron Lung is a sci-fi horror in a future where humanity has colonized the stars. After a mysterious event known as “The Quiet Rapture” caused the disappearance of all habitable planets in the system, humanity is forced to scavenge natural resources from other planets via expeditions. They send death row inmates to their doom, hopping from planet to planet, finding the resources they need to sustain life. If successful, they earn their freedom.
Our main character, an unnamed convict, is tasked to explore a planet with an ocean full of blood inside a dilapidated submersible known only as the Iron Lung. The film adaptation will star Mark Fischbach (Markiplier) as the unnamed convict exploring the blood-red ocean in search of vital resources.

It’s also worth noting that Fischbach is not the only actor in the movie. The cast also includes other stars like Dispatch’s Sean McLoughlin (Jacksepticeye) and the iconic Troy Baker. We should expect more dialogue between the protagonist and his communications with humanity’s last bastion, as well as more information about the other convicts that were sent to their imminent doom before you.
How the Iron Lung Film Expands the Videogame

There is no mention that Iron Lung will be a sequel or prequel to the videogame, so we can safely assume that it will be a 1:1 adaptation of David Szymanski’s project. However, that does not mean the film can’t expand the lore further. With Szymanski at the helm since pre-production, we can expect the film to explore the protagonist’s life, including his motivations and backstory. Markiplier needs to act, after all.
The original game’s playtime is 1 to 2 hours long, which is already ideal for the standard length of a feature film. Markiplier and Szymanski could sprinkle in fresh insights on the shady individuals responsible for this morally depraved criminal sentence, or dive further into the crimson abyss with more indescribable horrors at the ready. Who knows? Maybe we might find more details about Iron Lung’s mysterious “Quiet Rapture” event in the film adaptation.
The Iron Lung movie is set to release in limited theaters across the United States on January 30, 2026. You can find the nearest theater to buy tickets here. No word on an international release date yet.
